At 1860 Munich, Bender started his football career in the U-14 team and progressed through all of the club's youth teams over three years. In November 2007, he extended his contract with the club until 2011. However, due to financial difficulties, both Sven and his twin brother Lars Bender had to leave Munich in 2009. Sven joined Borussia Dortmund, while Lars moved to Bayer Leverkusen.

Bender made his Bundesliga debut for Borussia Dortmund on September 19, 2009, in a match against Hannover 96. He quickly established himself as a key player in the team's starting eleven, especially in the defensive midfield position. Bender scored his first Bundesliga goal on February 12, 2011, against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He played a crucial role in Dortmund's success during the years 2011 and 2012, helping the team win the national championship and the DFB-Pokal.

Throughout his career at Dortmund, Bender faced several injuries, but he remained a valuable asset to the team. He extended his contract with the club multiple times, with the most recent extension in February 2016, keeping him at Dortmund until 2021. In July 2017, after eight years at Dortmund, Bender joined Bayer Leverkusen, reuniting with his twin brother Lars.

Internationally, Bender represented Germany at various levels. He was part of the team that won the 2008 European Under-19 Championship. Injuries prevented him from participating in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, he was selected for the Germany Olympic football team in 2016, where the team won the silver medal.

After retiring as a player, Bender transitioned into coaching. In June 2022, he was appointed as the assistant coach of the Germany U-16 national team by the German Football Association. This marked the beginning of his coaching career, and he continued to contribute to the development of young talents in German football.
